The Diamond Jubilee Prayer

God of time and eternity,
whose Son reigns as servant, not master;
we give you thanks and praise
that you have blessed this Nation, the Realms and Territories
with ELIZABETH,
our beloved and glorious Queen.
In this year of Jubilee,
grant her your gifts of love and joy and peace
as she continues in faithful obedience to you, her Lord and God
and in devoted service to her lands and peoples,
and those of the Commonwealth,
now and all the days of her life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Sunday 13th November 2011

We did remember them.

Picture of Remembrance Service on Sunday 13th November 2011 showing service veterans, ex and active service personnel with church congregation outside church The congregation of St Mary the Virgin Davyhulme were privileged to have veterans of the Second World War, other ex-service men and women who had seen active service across the world and a serving RAF officer in the congregation on Remembrance Sunday.

As a church family our act of worship included the planting of crosses bearing the names of service men and women from the parish who had given their lives whilst fighting for their country in the two world wars.  These poppy crosses were laid by both children and adults.

Picture showing member of congregation and young son placing a small cross of remembrance at the church monumentThe poppy wreaths in remembrance of those who had died in each world war, were laid by two members of our congregation, both veterans of the Second World War, one of whom had been a prisoner of war in Germany after being shot down in his Short Stirling bomber.

In addition a wreath in memory of those service people who had died in more recent conflicts was laid by a serving officer in the RAF, who was a former choirboy and crucifer at St Mary's.

Ordination of Andrea Jones as a priest

Ordination – a reason to celebrate!

Picture following the ordination of the Rev Andrea Jones, Assistant Curate at St Mary the Virgin, along with 10 other curates from Manchester Diocese, with the Bishop of Middleton, taken on Saturday 18 June 2011 outside Manchester Cathedral.

Saturday 18 June was another milestone in the ministerial life of the Rev Andrea Jones, Assistant Curate at St Mary the Virgin, as she, along with 10 other of her colleagues from the Manchester Diocese, was ordained as a priest by the bishop of Middleton in Manchester Cathedral.
Ordination is undertaken after much consideration, preparation and prayer and we are grateful for the opportunity to have been able to support Rev. Andrea over the last few years.
The picture taken outside the Cathedral after the service shows a very happy Rev Andrea by the Bishop.

The church was full the following day, Sunday 19 June, as we welcomed back an old friend of our church, Bishop Steven, who preached at the 10.30am service where Rev. Andrea officiated at her first Eucharist.
A barbecue in the church grounds (in the sunshine!) after the morning service helped us round off a very joyful occasion.  Just check out the pictures here

A fantastic Royal Wedding Celebration

What a day !
Look at the pictures

Picture inside the church hall showing members of the congregation seated watching the Royal Wedding broadcast on a large screen

Around 50 people gathered in the Church Hall from 09.30 hrs onwards to watch the Royal Wedding on a big screen, the atmosphere was fantastic, many of us were dressed up for the occasion with fancy hats, "Posh Frocks" and tantalisers.

Sound and Vision man David battled with short interruptions to the picture, which we now know were mainly due to the BBC Website being overloaded.  We cheered and sang hymns, it was almost like being in Westminster Abbey !

After the Royal Couple had arrived at Buckingham Palace we toasted the Bride & Groom with a glass of bubbly, followed by a delicious cold lunch prepared by Yvonne.

After watching the kiss on the balcony and fly-past at 13.30 hrs (David had a good view !), we re-grouped for the afternoon celebrations which started at 14.30 hrs.

Ice Cream Sundays

At long last St Mary's now has a Deep Freeze, which is located in the store room in the Church Hall.
We can now serve Ice Cream and Iced Lollies at parties and also store food long-term.

In order to save electricity the freezer is normally switched OFF.  If you want to use the freezer,
please switch it ON at least four (4) hours before putting the food in, to allow it to reach the correct
operating temperature.

Before switching the freezer OFF, please check to ensure that there is no food remaining in the freezer.
