Parish Trip to Yorkshire – Sunday 22nd February 2009

Following the 10.30 service on Sunday 22nd February 2009 over 50 members of St Mary’s Church left Davyhulme by coach to visit two churches in Yorkshire.

Our first stop was at the “Three Nuns” at Mirfield for a quick lunch, which considering that the total price of the coach and lunch was only £15.00, proved very satisfactory and seemed to be enjoyed by all

This was followed by a visit to St Thomas, Manchester Rd, Huddersfield, which was built between 1857 and 1859, the architect being Sir George Gilbert Scott who is best known for his masterpiece, St Pancras station and hotel.

(For more details on the architect Click Here ) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gilbert_Scott)

St Thomas's, Huddersfield, has, for almost one hundred and fifty years, offered daily worship in the catholic tradition of the Church of England.

The church building was extensively reordered in 1990 and the re-ordering gave us much food for thought.

After leaving St Thomas’s,the party then went to Halifax Parish Church (St John the Baptist) for a good look round, afternoon tea and Evensong. Parts of Halifax Parish Church are over 900 years old and the church is most impressive in many ways

The Evensong service was conducted by Rev. Hillary Barber, sometime vicar of St Clements – Chorlton and former curate of Canon Chris Ford.

The trip was very informative and enjoyable, and once again thanks are due to our PCC Secretary, Angela May for organising this event.

Website Update

As you are probably aware, the St Mary's parish website was re-vamped in July 2008, to allow David Mackereth & Margaret North to have direct control of the website. Since then Margaret & I have struggled with numerous technical problems which have made it difficult for us to update and extend the website.

In an effort to resolve these problems we have now re-created and upgraded the whole website from scratch, and at present it appears that this has resolved most of the problems we were experiencing.

The updated website contains the following new topics :-

Description of the Church
Details of the Organ
History of the Church Hall
History of the Day School
Local Notabilities from the past
Safeguarding Children
Sunbeams
Footprints
Lazers
Rainbows
Brownies
Guides
Mother & Toddler Group
Mothers’ Union

We hope to be able to cover the following topics in the near future :-

Previous Clergy
Pew Kneelers
Book of Remembrance
